Coherent approximation of distributed expert assessments

چکیده

Expert judgments of probability and expectation play an integral role in many systems. Financial markets, public policy, medical diagnostics and more rely on the ability of informed experts (both human and machine) to make educated assessments of the likelihood of various outcomes. Experts however are not immune to errors in judgment (due to bias, quantization effects, finite information or many other factors). One way to compensate for errors in individual judgments is to elicit estimates from multiple experts and then fuse the estimates together. If the experts act sufficiently independently to form their assessments, it is reasonable to assume that individual errors in judgment can be negated by pooling the experts' opinions. Determining when experts' opinions are in error is not always a simple matter. However, one common way in which experts' opinions may be seen to be in error is through inconsistency with the known underlying structure of the space of events. Not only is structure useful in identifying expert error, it should also be taken into account when designing algorithms to approximate or fuse conflicting expert assessments. This thesis generalizes previously proposed constrained optimization methods for fusing expert assessments of uncertain events and quantities. The major development consists of a set of information geometric tools for reconciling assessments that are inconsistent with the assumed structure of the space of events. Radar Signal Detection in K-distributed Clutter by Pade Approximation

In this paper, two suboptimum detectors are proposed for coherent radar signal detection in K-distributed clutter. Assuming certain values for several initial moments of clutter amplitude, the characteristic function of the clutter amplitude is approximated by a limited series. Using the Pade approximation, it is then converted to a rational fraction. Thus, the pdf of the clutter amplitude is o...

Coherent lower previsions in systems modelling: products and aggregation rules

We discuss why coherent lower previsions provide a good uncertainty model for solving generic uncertainty problems involving possibly conflicting expert information. We study various ways of combining expert assessments on different domains, such as natural extension, independent natural extension and the type-I product, as well as on common domains, such as conjunction and disjunction. We prov...

Expert judgement combination using moment methods

Moment methods have been employed in decision analysis, partly to avoid the computational burden that decision models involving continuous probability distributions can suffer from. In the Bayes linear (BL) methodology prior judgements about uncertain quantities are specified using expectation (rather than probability) as the fundamental notion. BL provides a strong foundation for moment method...

On the bounds in Poisson approximation for independent geometric distributed random variables

‎The main purpose of this note is to establish some bounds in Poisson approximation for row-wise arrays of independent geometric distributed random variables using the operator method‎. ‎Some results related to random sums of independent geometric distributed random variables are also investigated.
